[CROCHETING] Creating a Cozy Double Crochet Scarf for my Brother

I recently completed a scarf for my brother. Last year, before the Christmas holiday, I asked him what he needed. He mentioned that a scarf would be great. My brother lives in Northeastern part of the United States. It is a really cold climate and so, he needed a comfy, bulky but lightweight scarf. I realized that he needed a scarf that could double wrap around his neck over his winter coat. It can also be put under his coat.

My brother likes black and purple. So, I needed to decide on the appropriate yarn colors. For the black yarn, I picked a really nice soft acrylic yarn in black. It is the Lion Brand Yarn Hometown Bulky Yarn South Dakota Black.

I picked this yarn up at Amazon.com. It was in a 3-pack and was from the same dye lot. This ensures that the yarn will not be ever so slightly varied. I hate when that happens!

I really like that the yarn is a super Bulky (weight = 6). I’ve worked with this weight for several years now. This yarn is 100% acrylic and is soft and was super lightweight, making it a pleasure to work with.

The yarn is black, so I ran it through the wash with the purple yarn in the pattern. I did this to make sure the color did not bleed. By the way, always do a pre-wash on your yarn or be sure to buy yarn that is pre-washed.

I picked this yarn up directly from Lionbrand.com. Amazon.com carries this yarn in 3-pack from the Lion Brand store.

I really loved the texture of this yarn which is an acrylic wool blend. as per the label, the yarn is suitable for knitting and crocheting.

This yarn is a Bulky weight = 5. It was okay to mix with the weight 6 of the Black yarn in this pattern. Again, the black yarn is a super Bulky (weight = 6). Both yarns are mostly acrylic so that kept the scarf soft and lightweight.

Next, I picked the double crochet stitch pattern was be best since the scarf needed to be done quickly. It went pretty fast (4 weeks) and the final came out great. The pattern is simple enough – 21 stitches wide by 21 double crocheted rows. I chose the double crocheted stitch so that I wouldn’t have to do so many rows. So, 21 rows produced 42 rows of single stitches which is a good length.

Here is the pattern. Sometimes, I sketch it out in MS PowerPoint since the blocks are easy to sketch out. They repeat around the center of the scarf. So, in terms of rows the pattern is easy to remember at 5-2-14-CENTER-14-2-5.

The final dimensions for this scarf are 9″ wide by 56″ tall. As you can see from the pictures, the scarf is long enough to wrap once around the neck.

I did make the fringe shorter as my brother didn’t want fringe hanging too long. I ended up trimming the fringe to 2-1/2″ tall.
