When I saw this hat pattern, I thought it was the cutest. It would make great Christmas gifts for the ladies this year. The City Sophisticate crocheted hat pattern from Yarnspirations is the first hat that I’ve crocheted. Thus far, I’ve only done scarves and blankets. Yarnspirations rates this pattern as Easy, which I agree.
The pattern calls for all single crochet stitches for the top (first pic) and middle (center pic). These sections are followed by double crochet stitches to make up the brim (right pic). A row of single crochet stitching caps it off.
The hat (top row, left pic) itself consists of –
- the TOP which is concentric circles (top row – middle pic)
- the MIDDLE which is made up of repeating rows (top row – right pic)
- the BRIM which is next (bottom row – left, middle, right pics) and gets turned up once you done
One really helpful inclusion in the pattern is an adjustment to make the hat larger. The original hat measures 26″ around the head. The easy adjustment makes is 30″ around. I completed hats in both sizes with no problems.
The pattern calls for one skein of a bulky #6 yarn (left pic below). I used one skein of Lion Brand’s #5 Homespun. This yarn is just as bulky and textured with graduated color. The yarn I chose was the turquoise (now discontinued) with glitter string woven throughout (middle pic below). The other color choices are similarly beautiful. Check them out on Lion Brand’s website or at Amazon (right pic below; see Resources). The yarns can be pretty pricey per skein so look for sales.
After a few starts with the top, I finished the hat in 3 hours the first time. Not bad for a first hat. This first hat is for my mother. I quickly whipped up a second hat for my mother-in-law and one for me as well! I spent two hours for each hat.
